Champions League Season 2005 - 2006: How it works |
| Preliminary Stage:
Liverpool (the holders) enter at the 1st Qualifying phase. This move
by UEFA comes after Liverpool finished 5th in the English
Premiership and under normal circumstances would not have been able
to defend their Trophy. Stage 1 - 32 teams are split into 8 groups of four using an amazingly complicated proceedure that involves seedings and keeping clubs from the same country apart. Where two teams are level on points they are separated firstly by the results against each other rather than overall record. Top two qualify for Stage Two - 3rd in the group enters the UEFA Cup at the 3rd Round stage. Stage 2 - the competition follows a regular knock out format from Stage 2 onwards |
